Youth Hunting in Colorado: A Quick Guide for Parents
Youth Hunting in Colorado: A Quick Guide for Parents
When a child shows interest in hunting, most parents want to do the right thing, but aren’t always sure where to begin. Colorado supports youth hunting and the traditions that come with it, but the state also has clear laws in place to ensure young hunters are safe, supervised, and properly educated before ever stepping into the field.
This guide is designed specifically for parents. It explains what Colorado law requires for youth hunters and how kids can earn their Hunter’s Safety license.
Colorado Laws for Youth Hunters
Before a child can legally hunt in Colorado, parents need to understand how state law regulates age, licensing, and supervision. These requirements are set by Colorado Parks & Wildlife and apply to all youth hunters.
Age and License Requirements
A child’s age determines what type of hunting they may participate in and which licenses are allowed.
- For small game, waterfowl, and turkey: Youth under 18 must have a valid hunting license. A youth small-game license is available for hunters aged 17 and younger.
- For big game hunting: Youth must be ages 12–17. A child may apply for or purchase a license at age 11 if they will turn 12 before the end of the season, but they may not hunt until their 12th birthday.
Youth residency status follows that of their parent or legal guardian.
Mentored Hunting and Supervision
Colorado law places a strong emphasis on supervision for youth hunters. In most situations, youth must hunt with a qualified mentor in the field.
A legal mentor must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have completed Hunter Education
- Be able to see and hear the youth hunter at all times
The mentor does not need to be actively hunting, but they are legally responsible for supervision, safety, and guidance throughout the hunt.
Apprentice Hunter Certificate
Colorado offers a free Apprentice Hunter Certificate. This option allows a youth to hunt for one year without completing Hunter Education, as long as a qualified mentor is present at all times. The certificate can only be used twice in a lifetime and is intended as a short-term introduction rather than a replacement for education.
Hunter Education Courses for Colorado Youth
Hunter Education, often called Hunter’s Safety, is required for most youth hunters before purchasing a hunting license. It prepares young hunters to enter the field safely and responsibly.
