Mesa Outfitters, Loren Williams
About
Mesa Outfitters is a family-owned operation based in Grand Junction that specializes in authentic, “old-school” horseback hunts on the Grand Mesa—the largest flat-top mountain in the world. Operating primarily in Game Management Unit 41, they hold the exclusive outfitting permit for over 100,000 acres of the National Forest. This specific unit is non-motorized, meaning the terrain is accessible only by foot or horse, ensuring a primitive and low-pressure backcountry experience at elevations reaching 10,000 feet.
The outfitter provides a range of hunting services for Elk, Mule Deer, and Black Bear:
- Fully Guided Horseback Hunts: These all-inclusive trips feature 1-on-1 or 2-on-1 guiding, with base camps consisting of spacious canvas wall tents.
- DIY Drop Camps: For self-sufficient hunters, the team handles the logistics of packing hunters and their gear into established camps that have been used for over 40 years.
- Archery & Muzzleloader: The non-motorized nature of Unit 41 makes it a premier destination for archery and muzzleloader hunters looking to pursue bugling bulls during the rut without the interference of ATVs.
Outside of the fall seasons, Mesa Outfitters offers high-country summer horseback vacations and guided fly-fishing trips to the trout-filled lakes and alpine streams of the Mesa. Whether leading a hunter to a 200-class mule deer or guiding a family on a summer trail ride, Loren Williams emphasizes a “wind back the clock” philosophy, preserving the traditional pack-style methods that defined Colorado outfitting a century ago.
