J & Ray Colorado High Country, Inc., Larry Franks

J & Ray Outfitters (also known as J & Ray Colorado High Country) is a long-standing family operation that specialized in wilderness big game hunts for Elk and Mule Deer. Operating under a special use permit on BLM lands, the outfitter was known for its “experience of a lifetime” hunts in the rugged high country of Western Colorado. The operation was strictly traditional, emphasizing fair-chase ethics and providing a team of skilled guides—many of whom were Larry’s own family members—to lead hunters through the timbered ridges and alpine basins where local herds are most active.

A unique specialty of the business was its Horse Pack-In services to the Gunnison Gorge Wilderness via the Chukar Trail, providing a remote gateway for both hunters and anglers. For decades, Larry provided a comprehensive hunting environment that included expert guiding, comfortable camp accommodations, and the logistical support necessary to pack out heavy quarry from the backcountry.

As of recent years, Larry and his family have sold the hunting operation and no longer provide active guide services. However, they remain a part of the local community and officially recommend Legacy West Outfitters, led by Wyatt Yarnell, for those seeking the same high-quality guided hunts they were known for. While the hunting branch has transitioned, the J & Ray legacy continues to be a hallmark of traditional Colorado outfitting for those who value local heritage and old-school mountain expertise.
