Big Horn Outfitters LLC, Richie Richardson

Big Horn Outfitters is a family-oriented operation that draws on three generations and over 60 years of collective experience in the Colorado outdoors. Authorized by the U.S. Forest Service, the outfitter provides expert guiding services in Game Management Units 4, 214, and 441, located in the northern reaches of the Routt National Forest. This region is home to robust populations of Elk, Mule Deer, Pronghorn Antelope, and Black Bear, offering a diverse hunting landscape that spans from grassy slopes at 7,000 feet to rugged black timber forests exceeding 10,000 feet.

The operation is strictly “fair chase,” focusing on providing a memorable and safe experience rather than guaranteed harvests. Richie and his team offer fully guided horseback hunts that utilize a string of mountain-ready horses to access remote camps designated by the permitting agencies. These camps are designed to be “cozy and well-equipped,” featuring wood-heated tents or cabins, comfortable cots, and personal care facilities. The outfitter is particularly noted for its comprehensive support, providing clients with detailed gear lists and logistical guidance to ensure they are physically and mentally prepared for the challenges of high-country hunting.

Beyond the hunt itself, Big Horn Outfitters emphasizes the importance of the traditional mountain camp culture. Meals are a highlight of the stay, with the team priding itself on serving “delicious” camp-cooked food that fosters camaraderie among hunters and staff. Whether you are an archery enthusiast pursuing elk in the aspen-filled valleys or a rifle hunter looking for a trophy muley in the high timber, Richie Richardson provides a professional, tradition-rich service that prioritizes the spirit of the hunt and the beauty of the Colorado wilderness.
